Renowned banker Rienzie T. Wijetilleke passed away yesterday morning at the age of 86, family sources said.
Wijetilleke was a towering figure in the country’s financial sector, having served as Managing Director and later Chairman of Hatton National Bank PLC. Under his leadership, the bank underwent significant growth and modernisation, solidifying its position as one of Sri Lanka’s leading financial institutions.
In addition to his role at HNB, Wijetilleke also served as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Banks’ Association, playing a pivotal role in shaping
banking policy and strengthening industry collaboration. He was also a former Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and widely regarded as a mentor and thought leader in the banking community.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
